PE Intent
Why do we teach our pupils:
Each of our children is a precious and unique individual, with God given talents and abilities, created to fulfil a special role in God’s intricate plan for the world.
‘“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.’ Jeremiah 29:11
Why do we teach PE?
St Leonard’s Primary School teaches Physical Education (PE) because it is an essential part of the national curriculum and plays a key role in children’s overall development. PE helps pupils build fitness, coordination, and motor skills while also promoting healthy lifestyles from an early age. It supports children’s mental wellbeing by boosting confidence and reducing stress, and it gives them opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, and social skills through games and group activities. By providing a wide range of sports and physical challenges, the school encourages pupils to enjoy being active and to carry positive attitudes toward exercise into later life.
How will our teaching of PE enable our pupils to fulfil the plan God has for them?
PE enables pupils to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually so they can flourish as God intends. Through developing their bodies, children learn to respect and care for the gift of health that God has given them. By working together in teams, showing fairness, and supporting one another, they practise Christian values such as respect, kindness, and perseverance. PE also builds confidence, resilience, and joy, helping children to recognise their unique gifts and use them in service of others. In this way, teaching PE supports pupils in living life in all its fullness, fulfilling the plan God has for them as individuals created in His image.
What do we want to achieve by teaching PE?
By teaching PE, we want to ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy active, healthy lifestyles both now and in the future. We aim to nurture physical fitness and coordination, while also encouraging teamwork, resilience, and respect. Through a broad and engaging curriculum, pupils will experience a wide range of sports and activities that inspire them to participate, persevere, and succeed. Ultimately, our goal is for every child to discover enjoyment in movement, build positive attitudes towards physical activity, and grow in confidence to use their God-given talents to live life to the full.

We are delighted to announce that St Leonard’s Primary School has been awarded the Platinum School Games Mark for 2022/2023! This is the highest level of recognition and celebrates our ongoing commitment to sport, physical education, and the wellbeing of all our pupils. The award reflects the hard work and enthusiasm of our children, who take part in a wide range of sporting activities with passion and determination. It also recognises the dedication of our staff in providing high-quality PE lessons, opportunities for competition, and a curriculum that promotes fitness, teamwork, and resilience.
Achieving the Platinum Award is a huge honour and demonstrates that sport and physical activity are at the heart of life at St Leonard’s. We are proud of every pupil for their effort and achievements, and we thank our families and community for their support in helping us reach this milestone. At St Leonard’s, we believe that sport has the power to inspire, unite, and bring joy. This award celebrates not just our success in competition, but our commitment to ensuring that every child has the chance to flourish, stay active, and enjoy the gift of movement as part of God’s plan for them.
