Geography Intent

Why do we teach our pupils:

Each of our children is a precious and unique individual, with God given talents and abilities, created to fulfil a special role in God’s intricate plan for the world.

‘“For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.’ Jeremiah 29:11

Why do we teach Geography?

Emphasis is placed on investigative learning opportunities to help children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of each unit of work covered throughout the school. Each lesson begins with, and revisits any prior knowledge the children have to help deepen their geographical understanding. We make links to work in science, history, English, DT, maths and PSHE when delivering our geography curriculum. Visit to the local area are used to develop children’s understanding of the world in which they live. We would love to visit some of the ‘far away’ places we study but we enjoy exploring them through online research and atlases!

Through the framework of the 2014 National curriculum geography taught at St. Leonard’s school, aims to ensure that children:

  • Develop age-appropriate, accurate knowledge of the location, physical and human characteristics of a wide range of globally significant places including terrestrial and marine locations
  • Use this knowledge to provide a geographical context to study and understand the actions of important geographical processes
  • Understand that these processes give rise to key physical features of the world, how these are affected and how they bring change to the geographical landscape
  • Use and interpret a wide range of sources of geographical information, including maps, globes and aerial maps.
  • To promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development helping them to have a greater understanding of their place in the world, and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment.
  • Offer opportunities to show empathy towards and gain deeper understanding of current world issues.

How will our teaching of Geography enable our pupils to fulfil the plan God has for them?

Through our teaching of Geography, we enable pupils to see the wonder and order of God’s creation, developing awe, gratitude, and a deep sense of responsibility for the world He has entrusted to us. By exploring places, people, and environments, children grow in global awareness and compassion, recognising the dignity of all made in God’s image. They are encouraged to consider issues of justice, stewardship, and sustainability, learning to make wise choices that honour God and serve others. In this way, Geography equips our pupils with knowledge, skills, and values that help them to discover and fulfil the unique plan God has for their lives and to live as faithful, responsible disciples in His world.

What do we want to achieve by teaching Geography?

At St. Leonard’s, we believe that Geography helps provoke and answer questions about the natural and human world, that God created for us. We will encourage children to develop a greater understanding of their world and place with their responsibilities within it. Geography helps children develop a range of investigation and problem-solving skills that are transferrable to other subjects within the curriculum. It can be used to promote children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography, is by nature, an investigation subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills and feeds a child’s natural curiosity. We seek to inspire in children curiosity and fascination about the world in which they live and its people, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote children’s interest and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of Earth’s key physical and human processes. We aim to ensure children are aware of topical geographical issues, the importance of sustainability and human actions upon our world, which God created.
